Today the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the feast of San Pedro Poveda Castroverde, a Spanish priest, educator, and martyr who was killed on this day in 1936 during the early weeks of the Spanish Civil War. Born on 3 December 1874 in Linares, Jaén, Poveda studied in Granada and was ordained a priest in 1896. He devoted his life to education, particularly in the mining communities of Oviedo, where he founded schools and academies for the children of workers. In 1911 he was named a canon of the Cathedral of Oviedo. Forced to flee during the anticlerical persecution of 1921, he moved to Madrid, where he founded the Teresian Association in 1911 — a secular institute dedicated to the intellectual and spiritual formation of teachers. On 28 July 1936, at the height of the anticlerical violence in the capital, Poveda was recognised outside a church in the Cuatro Caminos neighbourhood and shot by Republican militia members. He was canonised by Pope John Paul II on 4 May 2003. His feast is celebrated alongside those of San Nazario and San Celso, early Christian martyrs venerated in Milan, and San Víctor, another early martyr of the Roman Church.
